Using the Verb "To Be" & "To Feel" To Express How Your Emotions

There are two different ways to express how you feel in the moment using two different verbs,"to be". We will focus on using the verb "to be" & "to feel".  We use this form:

"to be" + emotion & Personal Pronoun + "to feel" + emotion

  • I'm tired.
    • I feel tired.
  • You're excited.
    • You feel excited.
  • He's sleepy.
    • He feels sleepy.
  • She's anxious.
    • She feels anxious.
  • We're relaxed.
    • We feel relaxed.
  • They're lazy.
    • They feel lazy.
  • I'm depressed.
    • I feel depressed.
  • I'm angry.
    • I feel angry.
  • I'm surprised.
    • I feel surprised.
  • I'm ashamed.
    • I feel ashamed.
  • I'm shy.
    • I feel shy.
  • I'm calm.
    • I feel calm.
  • I'm bored.
    • I feel bored.
  • I'm confused.
    • I feel confused.
  • I'm satisfied.
    • I feel satisfied.
  • I'm sick.
    • I feel sick.
  • I'm relieved.
    • I feel relieved.

Using either of these forms to express how you feel is clearly understood to the native English speaker. Sometimes they are used interchangeably. Use the form which is easiest for you to pronounce. Here you can use two different forms:

Verb( to be )  + emotion + rest of the sentence...

  • She's sleepy from eating a lot.
  • He's tired of playing the game.
  • I'm anxious to see you tomorrow.
  • They're confused about their work.
  • We 're loved by many people.
Subject Pronoun + Verb( to feel ) + emotion + rest of the sentence...
  • They feel sad because of the movie.
  • We feel grateful for having you here with us.
  • You feel appreciated because you worked very hard.
  • She feels happy when she goes to school.
  • They feel relaxed when they drink wine.
